If you have a medical condition at the time you travel that requires you to take a prescription medication, have your doctor write you a letter describing the medical condition and the prescription medications you are taking including the generic names of prescribed drugs. If something happens to your prescription all of your doctors information will be on the letter along with the medical description of your condition and any medicine you are taking. It is also a great idea to find out key words and phrases in the local language of where you are traveling for your condition and your medication.

Also, when you carry medications overseas, leave it in the original containers so it is clearly labeled instead of putting it in a baggie with no information about the drug, and You should check with the foreign embassy of the country you are visiting to be sure the medication you are taking with you is not considered an illegal narcotics in that area. To get a listing of all foreign embassies click on the following link http://www.state.gov/s/cpr/rls/dpl/32122.htm.

If you wear glasses, take an extra pair with you. It is a good idea to pack medicines and extra glasses in a carry on bag so they will be available in case your checked luggage is lost – this is happening more often. If you can get a back up supply of your medication, you should pack the backup supply of medicine and an additional pair of glasses in your checked luggage.

If you have allergies, be careful with foods, or insect bites, that might be unique in other countries. Talk to your doctor about wearing a “medical alert” bracelet and / or have your doctor write a letter about your allergy and what treatment should be given if you should you become ill or have an allergic reaction. All travelers should familiarize themselves with conditions at their destination that could affect their health (high altitude or pollution, types of medical facilities, required immunizations, availability of required pharmaceuticals, etc.).
